Here are some of our most frequently asked questions:

What Does HVAC Stand For?

The acronym “HVAC” stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. When talking about an HVAC system, the contractor is referring to all of these things as a whole, though sometimes HVAC is often used when referring to only heating or air conditioning.

What Does Energy Efficiency Mean?

The energy efficiency of an HVAC system is how much energy—fuel, electricity—the system will consume, and how much temperature-controlling power the system will put out with that amount of energy. In short, it’s how much you pay versus how much comfort you get out of it.

  • What is SEER rating? Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is the measurement commonly used for cooling systems and air conditioners, using a rating system that goes as low as 8 (which is no longer legally high enough) all the way up to 30+.
  • What is AFUE rating? Standing for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, AFUE is used for heating systems and is expressed by a percentage—typically 80-100%.
  • Is a higher efficiency rating always better? Generally speaking, it is. That said, when you get to very high ratings, the cost of the system may exceed what you might save by purchasing and installing it. Always work with a certified HVAC contractor to find the right system for your needs!

Is Changing My Air Filter Important?

Replacing your air filter is one of the most important things you can do for your HVAC system as a homeowner. There’s no replacement for professional HVAC maintenance, but keeping your filter fresh can improve system performance, reduce energy waste, and can help to avoid many common causes of a breakdown.

  • How often should I change my HVAC air filter? Monthly is the safest bet, though if you use the more powerful pleated polyester filters, you may be able to stretch it to 2-3 months.
  • Where do I change my air filter? Most commonly the filter is located in the return or the blower compartment of your indoor unit. The panel should be very easy to access—many of them simply slide off or open with a latch.

Do I Need to Schedule HVAC Maintenance?

It’s a very good idea, yes. Annual AC and furnace maintenance reduces system wear, helps to avoid costly repairs, and keeps your system running at optimal efficiency levels.

  • When should I schedule maintenance? HVAC tune-ups should be scheduled annually before the season starts. This means in the spring for AC systems, and in the fall for heating equipment.
  • Does my heat pump need maintenance? Heat pumps require maintenance twice a year. This is because they serve as both a heating and cooling system, and they tend to see use all year.

For furnace, heat pump, or air conditioning maintenance, don’t hesitate to contact Comfort Specialist online or by calling 256-361-5665.

What Size HVAC System Do I Need?

The “size” of a cooling system is usually expressed in tonnage. One ton translates to roughly 10,000 BTUs—the amount of energy your system will put out.

We cannot stress enough that HVAC replacements and installations should always involve a licensed contractor. When sizing a system, you have to factor in your heating and cooling load needs, the insulation in your home, square footage, climate, windows, and doors—there is a lot to cover.
